About Us

Makawao Elementary School (MES) is located on the slopes of Haleakala at the entrance of historic Makawao Town. The school has been serving Upcountry Maui since 1839, and some of the current buildings, constructed in 1936, have the unique history of having served as a U.S. Army hospital during WWII. Currently, Makawao Elementary educates students from Makawao, Hali'imaile, Olinda, and designated areas of Haiku in kindergarten through grade five. 

Makawao Elementary School’s mission is to create a safe learning environment, which nurtures the whole child by providing a meaningful and relevant education. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful, contributing members of a global society.

4th Grade Video 2021-2022 

Our 4th graders were hard at work putting together this stop motion video on the importance of wai (water). All art pieces were created by students using watercolor paint and watercolor pencil.

Congratulations to Mrs. Valdez’s kindergarten class. Their class book “This Was Once a Heart” was selected as a semi-finalist in the National Book Challenge, hosted by Studentreasures.
